KEARNEY — The Nebraska City High School Pioneer Speech Team made school history Thursday, Mar. 23 by finishing fourth at the Class B State Speech Tournament.  This was the school’s best team finish at the Nebraska State Activities Association annual competition.

Three juniors advanced to final rounds, bringing home three silver medals and fifth place finish. Oliver Borchers-Williams was state runner-up in both extemporaneous and persuasive speaking. In Informative Speaking, Chloe Higgins was state runner-up and Makensi Blum won fifth place.

The last time NCHS achieved top ten status at the state tournament was when they finished seventh in 2000 and fifth in 1999.

Three Pioneer Speakers now advance to two national tournaments. May 12-14, three qualified and will compete in the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions at Liberty High School in Kansas City, Missouri: Oliver Borchers-Williams in original oratory, and Ashley Robinson and Justin Thorne in dramatic interpretation. In June, Borchers-Williams competes in the National Speech and Debate Association’s national tournament in Birmingham, Alabama, qualified in international extemporaneous speaking.

It is a great day to be a Pioneer!
